Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is a procedure by which embryos obtained through IVF are screened for possible genetic or chromosomal abnormalities.
PGD causes no damage to embryos, it is performed on the third day of life, in the laboratory and embryo transfer of only healthy embryos occurs after a maximum of 24 hours.
PGD is indicated in all cases with suspected increased risk of chromosomal abnormality to the embryo such as, history of repeated abortions, advanced maternal age, repeated IVF failures, and in cases of altered male meiosis.
It is also indicated in cases of couples carrying sex-linked disorders, couples with alterations in their karyotype (translocations, inversions, etc.) and to prevent the transmission of certain genetic diseases (monogenic), including some muscular dystrophies, cystic fibrosis or Thalassemia.
